The dollar inched up against the yen in Asian trade Thursday with dip buying pushing up the greenback, while the Australian dollar strengthened on strong jobs data.
The U.S. dollar USDJPY, +0.20% was at ¥119.31, compared with ¥119.14 late Wednesday in New York. The Australian dollar AUDJPY, +0.96% was at $0.7760 from $0.7683.
Australia’s economy added more jobs than expected in March, pushing the unemployment rate down to 6.1%, its lowest level since December and better than the market consensus of 6.3%.
Among other currency pairs, the euro EURJPY, +0.12% was at ¥127.54, compared with ¥127.38 in New York. The Australian dollar AUDEUR, +0.86% was at ¥92.58 from ¥91.53.
The WSJ Dollar Index BUXX, -0.01% a measure of the dollar against a basket of major currencies, was down 0.09% at 87.21.
