Dollar pulls back from highest level against yen since late 2002

The dollar pulled back from ¥124.40, its highest level since late 2002, Thursday, but remained higher on the day.

The U.S. currency strengthened against most its rivals, with a few notable exceptions. After starting the session weaker against the dollar, the euro rose in afternoon trade after Pierre Moscovici, the European Union’s economics commissioner, said that talks with Greece are progressing, but much work remains. It ended the session slightly higher against the dollar.

The dollar USDJPY, -0.19%  strengthened to ¥124.10, compared with ¥123.75 late Wednesday in New York; the euro EURUSD, +0.0731%  weakened to $1.0937, from $1.0899. The pound GBPUSD, +0.1306%  weakened to $1.5307, from $1.5349 late Wednesday, after a second revision of U.K. first-quarter growth data came in slightly below expectations.
