The 42 million U.S. residents expected to take a road trip this Thanksgiving will be greeted with the lowest retail gasoline prices for the holiday since 2008, travel and leisure group AAA said Monday.
The average retail gas price has fallen for 17 straight days to $2.072 a gallon, 75 cents less than last year, and more than half of U.S. gas stations are selling gas for less than $2 a gallon, AAA said. The national average is expected to be under $2 a gallon by Christmas, the group reported.
Midwestern drivers have seen the largest price drops, AAA said. Midwestern refineries are back on line following both planned and unplanned maintenance work, helping to ease recent gas-price spikes in that region a few months ago, AAA said.
