Petronas stocks, refiners lead blue chips higher at midday

Fund buying of Petronas related stocks underpinned the FBM KLCI at midday on Tuesday, with Petronas Chemicals the biggest mover, as key Asian markets steadied after the previous day’s volatile session.

At 12.30pm, the KLCI was up 7.91 points or 0.48% to 1,645.50 -- recouping more than a third of the previous day's losses. Turnover was one billion shares valued at RM1.06bil. There were 377 gainers, 371 losers and 333 counters unchanged.

Reuters reported China set another firm fix for its currency on Tuesday and stepped up a verbal campaign, backed by what dealers said was aggressive buying, to convince sceptical investors that they were in control of events.
