The U.S. dollar was weaker against the yen in Asia trade Thursday, as Japanese companies bought and sold the dollar on the day of their book closings.
The greenback dropped to Y112.20 at around 0450 GMT after touching a high of Y112.67 in midmorning trade. That compared with Y112.43 late Wednesday in New York.
The currency trade during Tokyo session was largely flow-driven, in which both dollar selling and buying by Japanese corporate players helped move the U.S. currency. The dollar initially gained in midmorning trade due to dollar buying flows from importers and others, but then trimmed earlier gains in a sign of dollar selling by other players such as exporters.
