Dollar regains some ground as Japan officials talk down the yen

The yen was weaker against the dollar and the euro in choppy Asian trade on Monday, following jawboning from Japanese government officials to stem the currency’s strength.

The dollar USDJPY, +0.59%  was changing hands at ¥106.63, compared with ¥106.55 late Friday in New York. The euro EURJPY, +0.46%  was at ¥121.27 midday from ¥120.95 late Friday.

With investors resetting their expectations for the Federal Reserve’s early rate increase following dismal U.S. jobs data Friday, the dollar fell to as low as ¥106.35 earlier in the Asia session Monday, its lowest level since May 4. Jobs data showed U.S. employers last month added the fewest jobs in more than five years.
