The yen gained against its rival currencies during Asian trading Thursday, in the wake of comments by a Bank of Japan board member and as Tokyo stocks fell.
The U.S. dollar USDJPY, -0.26% fell to as low as ¥108.82, its weakest level since May 18, before rising to ¥109.27. This compares with ¥109.53 late Wednesday in New York.
The euro EURJPY, -0.17% softened to ¥122.29 midday in Tokyo from ¥122.50 late Wednesday, while the U.K. pound GBPJPY, -0.12% was trading at ¥157.65 from around ¥157.90. The Japanese currency also strengthened against the Australian dollar and the New Zealand dollar.
