The Malaysian Indian Textiles and General Stores Association (MITA) has urged the government to consider exempting prayer items from the Goods and Service Tax (GST).
Its secretary, Maheswary Ramasamy, said religious goods and especially prayer items were essential for various multi-ethnic groups in the country and prices of such items should be zero-rated or exempted from the GST which has been in force from April 1 this year.
"It is fair to say that prayer items should be cheaper for consumers as these are purchased by everyone, including those from the lower income group," she told Bernama.
Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan has said that only religious books had zero GST status.
