Inflation rate in June exceeds survey as food prices rise

Malaysia’s inflation rate in June rose 2.5%, which was slightly higher than the 2.4% forecast, mainly due to the increase in food and non-alcoholic beverages.

The Statistics Department said on Wednesday the inflation rate, which is measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), increased by 2.5% to 113.0 compared with 110.2 a year ago.

Overall, the index for food and non-alcoholic beverages, which accounts for 30.3% of the CPI, rose 3.4% on-year in June. It said the index for non-food (69.7 of the CPI) recorded a slower increase of 2.1%.
